An Email From The Flying Monkey Marathon

I thought I'd share with you an email I received from the Flying Monkey Marathon (an event I'm running in November). If I wasn't worried about being ill prepared for this race before, I am now :)

___________________________________________________

There are now less than 1500 hours until the third Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon begins. Or so I've been told. The way I see it, you are in deep trouble. Deep deep trouble. I would suggest that you consider starting to train for this thing. I would, if, in fact, training would help in any way.

It won't.

So you may as well not try.

'Tis better to blame November's hurt on a lack of training than on something far deeper. Something you cannot as easily change. Something that, apparently, is a part of your deepest soul: your foolishness. Utter and sheer foolishness. Foolishness manifest in your act of registration last month. Pitiful.

Don't get me wrong. It may not be permanent, your foolishness. Some have seen the error of their ways. A few wise men and women have sent me notes respectfully asking to be removed from the list of registrants for Monkey III. These few have perhaps chiseled away at their foolishness. Imperceptibly. But there it is.

In the mean time, you are still registered. And you have only a little time remaining. You should get your affairs in order. You should kiss those you love. And perhaps, you should pray to what ever force greater than you in which you believe.

If, in fact, that would help in any way.

It won't. Monkey is gonna hurt.

So, where was I? Oh yes. Monkey Marathon. Right. November 23. Packet pickup the day before, didn't I tell you that already? Loads of info on the website, including lodging info, maps, a really goofy message board and pictures of the park. Soon it will include a listing of bib numbers. Soon I will email you more info and maps for the various locations where you will need to be (or avoid) over Monkey weekend.

Answers to questions I have received -

- The first 1/3 mile and last 1/3 mile of the marathon are on grass. The rest is on asphalt.

- The course is not certified. As I have said elsewhere, if you get to the end and you (or your gadget) believe the route to be long, we won't charge you extra; if you believe it to be short, just keep running. But the course is about the right distance.

- Finishers will receive medals. If I can get my act together and have them made. If not, finishers will get to finish. But I should be able to get my act together. Please note, those who do not finish, well, you don't want to know.

- And to repeat something I have said many times before: as always, we are looking for volunteers on race morning. So if you know of anybody smart enough not to run who wants to come out and spend a sweltering or freezing morning in the park helping out, please let us know. Volunteers are awesome!

- Packet pickup will be at the Gordon JCC on November 22, 2008 between 2pm and 4pm. The JCC is located at 801 Percy Warner Blvd, Nashville, TN 37148. This is less than 2 miles from the race start/finish area. Maps to follow.

- We may be able to access the Gordon JCC for showers after the marathon. Stay tuned...

Please holler with questions, curses or interesting facts about the monkeyverse. If you have decided that you are too wise to run this thing, please let us know so we don't send the monkeys out looking for you.

Komen Greater Nashville Race for the Cure® needs you!!!

Dear Friends,

Many of you know that I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was twelve. Recently, my cousin past away from it. My sister was diagnosed in May, and fortunately, caught it at a very early stage before it became invasive. Now, one of my dearest friends is battling this dreaded disease.

I walk for them. And for your mothers, sisters, daughters, cousins and friends.

I would be honored to have you join my team or give us your support for this year's Komen Greater Nashville Race for the Cure® on October 4th in downtown Nashville.

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer knows no boundary, be it age, gender, socio-economic status or geographic location.

Will you help us make a difference?

Sincerely,
Angie Arnold

For those with a little too much time on your hands, the Florida Keys 100 Ultra may interest you:

From: Bob Becker [mailto:bobruns150@yahoo.com]
Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 2:02 PM
To: Bob Becker
Subject: FW: Keys 100 set for Saturday, May 16, 2009

Hello, Keys 100 Runners! I hope everyone had a great summer, is healthy and training hard. Jared Knapp and I have finally been able to nail down the date for next year’s Keys 100, and we wanted to share that with you. Our hope is to dramatically improve participation in the event next May 16-17 while retaining the basic format and personal touch of this year’s event. We learned a lot from the 2008 Inaugural, especially from the feedback received from many of you. Thanks so much for your insight and suggestions. We certainly hope to improve aspects of the race where possible going forward. That will be particularly true in the area of traffic awareness. The Florida DOT has promised to install signage at strategic locations to warn motorists of our race in progress. Although not yet confirmed, we have asked them to place cones on Seven Mile Bridge during the race to remind drivers to be alert. We will have more race marshals on the course to monitor events, answer questions and help in any way possible. Importantly, in 2009 we will strictly enforce the rule that racers MUST run facing traffic when on the road shoulder—i.e., when not running on a sidewalk or service road. We are looking at other things we can do, as well, and continue to request and welcome your suggestions.

I heard very positive “buzz” about the Keys 100 while running Badwater this summer and while volunteering at the Grand Teton Races in Wyoming over Labor Day weekend. I expect the number of individual race entrants to grow as word continues to spread in the ultra-running community. Based on feedback on our unique 100-mile, 6-person relay format, I expect to see exponential growth in the number of teams competing in 2009. That will certainly add to the fun and excitement of the weekend. Our team relay, where the team decides on the length and number of legs each racer will run, is perfect for the half-marathoner or 10K runner. I hope you will encourage all your running friends to put together their own 6-person team, choose a crazy name, decorate a van and come on down to Florida next May for a great Keys experience! The race website, www.Keys100.com, is being updated for 2009 right now—content first, with a whole new “look” to follow. Register before December 31st and pay an entry fee below last May’s fee. Again in 2009, we will waive your entry fee (or refund it if already paid) when you raise three times the applicable entry fee amount in contributions for the fight against prostate cancer. Details are posted on the website.

Finally, I have a favor to ask, and that is your feedback about the following: I have spoken with a lot of people since May about our 2008 Keys 100 race experience, especially the team relay event. I keep hearing comments like these: “Thousands of people have run marathons and “halfs” and 10Ks, and many are looking for something a bit different.” Many have told me how much people would like to race with their friends as well as run/train with them on weekends. Our 100-mile, 6-person format seems to fit that bill very well. As a result, I am actively exploring the idea of creating a Florida Relay Series. The Keys 100 relay race would be one of four in the series. An additional three relay races would be created, spread throughout the year. They would be held in other parts of Florida, each along a scenic route featuring the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf to create beautiful and memorable visual experiences. These other three would be out-and-back routes—50 miles each way--not the 100-mile point-to-point format as in the Keys. Likely venues are the Gulf Coast from St. Petersburg Beach north to Clearwater, then across the Intracoastal to Dunedin, returning to St. Pete. (Part of that race would actually be run on the hard-pack sand beach.) Another is the St. Augustine or Jacksonville area. A third might be Fort Lauderdale north to West Palm Beach. Teams could enter one or more of these races. Any team entering all four would be eligible for the Series Championship. My questions to you as “veterans” of the Keys 100 is whether the concept seems viable and, without holding anyone to it, whether you could imagine your own team, or group of friends, participating? Each event would also have a charitable component, the specific cause TBD.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. If you have a minute to give me your opinion about the relay race concept, I’d be much obliged.

Very best regards to you all,

Bob

The Inaugural Nashville Ultra

Nashville has a new ultramarathon event: The Nashville Ultra. A primarily urban event, it takes place on a combination of city streets and greenways. There will be 50k, 60k, 70k, and 80k runs. Personally, I'm not quite up to this one yet...maybe next year.

Mileage Junkie

Are you a mileage junkie? I am. I've logged every mile that I've run since 1999. I track the date, time of day, miles, minutes (or hours), conditions (temp, humidity, etc.), and general notes. At various times I'll add data about my weight, blood pressure, heart rate, injuries, new shoes, etc. On an annual basis, I write down the number of runs and miles. Basically, I've created a journal of my running life...a tale of triumph and setbacks.

I'm not really sure why I started logging. But, I'm addicted to tracking the miles. I know that a lot of distance runners worry more about the number of minutes they are running rather than miles. There's definitely logic in that approach, especially if you're already in decent physical condition. I've done this as well. In my opinion, though, the beginning runner gains more positive feedback from logging miles than just the amount of minutes they run. At the same time, I don't want to downplay the number minutes you should workout. Generally, I run at least 30 minutes per workout.

This Week in Middle TN Running

A longtime friend, Chuck Hargrove, sends out a weekly running events email. I thought I'd pass it along.

Tuesday 9/2
5:15 p.m. Percy Warner Park David Harris dharris@harriselectricsupply.com sends this invitation: "The group I run with meets on Tuesdays in Percy Warner park at 5:15 either at DeepWells (Mossy Ridge/Yellow Trail/ White Trail trailhead), the Nature Center on Hwy 100, or at the Harpeth Hills Golf Course parking lot. Our leader (Mike Kozel) sends an email in the morning suggesting a particular run. We generally run trails when the days are longer (April - September) and roads in the months with shorter days. Other runners are welcome. The best method for anyone interested would probably be just to send an emai l to me inquiring about the Run Du Jour if interested. Thanks." David

5:30 p.m. Athlete's House 1700 Portland Avenue Nashville: seven miles of CMM course. Make sure and register your mileage with Athlete's House. Free t-shirts are given at 50- and 100-mile levels.
